Save a configurator: give hesitant customers a second chance

Configurator opslaan: geef twijfelende klanten een tweede kans

Saving a configurator matters when you sell something customers do not decide on in five minutes. They want to see a price, compare options and often discuss it first. If they then have to enter all measurements and options again, many people drop off.

That is why you should let visitors save their configuration. They receive a link to their exact setup. When they return later, their measurements, choices and price are still there.

Why do customers drop off when they cannot continue later?

A larger purchase takes time. Especially for made-to-measure products for the home, such as a veranda, floor, window frame or sun shading. A visitor may want to discuss it with their partner first, measure the space again or compare different versions side by side.

Without a save option, they start from scratch on their next visit. They have to remember which width they chose, which colour went with it and what the price was. That feels like unnecessary work, so there is a good chance they put it off.

At that point, a quote request form is often still a step too far. The customer does not necessarily want a call right away. They simply want time to explore their options.

That does not mean they are not interested. They are just not ready to request a quote yet.

How does saving a configuration work for the visitor?

On the configurator summary, a visitor can choose save configuration. They enter their email address and receive a personal link. That link remains valid for two months.

When they return using that link, the custom product configurator opens where they left off. Their details are still there, including:

  • the measurements they entered;
  • the materials, colours and options they selected;
  • the price that matched those choices at that time;
  • the point in the form where they can continue.

This means they do not have to go through every step again. Returning is much easier than finding your product page again and filling everything in from scratch.

The visitor decides when to continue. Saving first is therefore different from requesting a quote straight away. Because the barrier is lower, you also reach people who would otherwise have left without sharing any details.

What does a saved configuration link do for you?

A saved configuration link will not solve every sales conversation. But it does prevent genuine interest from disappearing because the customer loses their preparation. Someone who comes back does not need to be convinced to use the configurator again. They can continue straight away with their own setup.

Their email address is also recorded as a contact signal, even if they do not submit a request yet. In the statistics, you can see how many visitors save a configuration, how many return and how many later submit a request.

This gives you a more honest picture of what happens on your website. Not everyone who does not request a quote today is lost. With larger purchases, there is often time between the first exploration and the final decision.

A good configurator supports that process by providing value first: letting people configure a product and see a price. See how a configurator on your website can guide visitors step by step through measurements, options and pricing.

Practical example: choosing a veranda is rarely a solo decision

Imagine someone configuring an aluminium veranda on a Sunday evening. They choose the width and depth, compare clear and tinted glass, add lighting and watch the total price update. Then the questions come up: should we choose anthracite or cream? And do we want a side wall after all?

The customer wants to discuss that at home first. Requesting a quote feels too early because two choices are still open. Without a saved link, they may close the tab intending to return later.

But later, they no longer remember exactly which version they had. They may find your website again, but they have to start over. There is a chance they drop off or continue with another supplier.

With a saved link, they email the configuration to themselves. Two days later, they open the same version with the selected measurements, roof material, lighting and price still in place. They adjust one option and can then request their quote.

This is not a trick to pressure a customer. It is simply a practical way to match how people really make major purchases: across several moments.

When is saving a configuration most valuable?

This feature is especially suitable for products with a decision period of days or weeks. Think of custom work where the price depends on several choices and customers want to discuss the purchase at home.

It is particularly useful when visitors choose from measurements, materials and options. The more time someone has already put into their setup, the more frustrating it is to lose it later.

Do not use saved configurations as a replacement for a clear route to contact. Someone who is ready to move forward should still be able to request a quote or ask a question easily. For example, read how a quote form with five key choices can prevent a form from becoming unnecessarily long.

How do you make it easier for visitors to return later?

The save feature works best when the rest of your form is calm and clear too. Ask only for the information needed to show an accurate price. Let visitors make choices step by step and use language they understand for every option.

When someone saves their setup, clearly explain what they receive: a link to continue later with the same configuration. This makes it clear that they are not immediately committing to a conversation or quote.

Also make sure the price and choices in the configurator remain logical. When someone returns, they should recognise what they created earlier. For a product with many visual choices, a 3D view or an image that changes with the selected options can make that recognition stronger.

Someone who saves a configuration is not a guaranteed customer. But you do give a hesitant visitor a second chance to return when they are ready.
